WushuCanada was established in 1993 under its founding associations and serves as the National governing body in promoting the sport of wushu in Canada. Since 1993, WushuCanada has hosted the 10th World Wushu Championships, held eight National Championships, has sent a representing team to eight World Wushu Championships, 2 Junior World Championships, and various other festivals and competitions. Originally recognized as The Confederation of Canadian Wushu Organizations (CCWO), WushuCanada is recognized by the Canadian Olympic Committee and is the official Canadian member of the International Wushu Federation (IWuF) which encompasses a membership of 121 countries spanning across all continents and regions. Each federation under the IWUF holds their own Continental and National Championships. |
| Statistics: | - Wushu is recognized under the IOC and the IWuF under the definition of a combative sport; - WushuCanada is a collective of 6 Provincial Wushu Organizations; - Over 5,000 individual members of which 95% is enrolled in a recognized recreational program; - 250 competitive athletes across Canada; - 35 registered certified coaches - 75% male, 25% female - Age breakdown of Wushu Athletes: < 6: 5% 7-12: 20% 13-15: 20% 16-18: 10% 18-35: 25% >35: 20% Wushu is a multi-discipline sport based on the two components of Taolu and Sanshou. Taolu is the non-combative routine based sport and Sanshou is the combative application based sport. Wushu in Canada is governed by WushuCanada, which is a federation of Provincial/Territorial members composed of local clubs and individual and organizational members. |

Wushu is a multi-discipline sport providing the opportunity of participation and promoting fitness, well-being and social values at all levels of interest and ability, regardless of age, from recreation to high performance. 2. The full potential of its diverse disciplines is maximized 3. The integrity and specificity of its diverse disciplines is preserved 4. Other martial arts related activities/disciplines with similar attributes are developed and promoted. 5. Wushu and the Chinese martial arts is a major sport in Canada practiced in a safe and technically sound environment. |
